Sharone Hakman founded Haks BBQ in October 2010 after the adventure of a lifetime: competing on the first season of Gordon Ramsey’s MasterChef. His BBQ sauce became his “secret weapon,” stealing the show and winning over the tastebuds of TV’s toughest food critics and chefs. We met the HAK’s team earlier this year at the Winter Fancy Food Festival in San Francisco where they not only innovated flavor but served up sauces on tap!
Launching HAKS BBQ is just one of the positives of Hakman’s decision to leave the financial planning world. Pursuing his passion for delectable food and adventure has also afforded him the opportunity to train with some of the best culinary minds, work at incredible restaurants, start a catering business, and become a private chef.
Sharone Hakman is on a mission to redefine BBQ – elevating it with real body, developed flavor, and sophistication. As he puts it, each sauce is “like a perfectly aged scotch…embodying a complexity of layers.”
HAKS BBQ currently offers FOUR flavors of sauce:
Chipotle Bourbon: Sweet and tangy with robust flavors and the heat of roasted chilies
Thai Chile Tamarind: Tropical heat for creative, “out of the box,” BBQing
Habenero Pineapple: Spicy and sweet with lingering tastes of comfort and freshness
Smoked Maple Mustard: Brand new flavor born on January 19th 2014

SHARONE HAKMAN SHARES HIS INSPIRATION AND MORE…
What inspired you to start your business?
My own passion for food and the need for real, preservative free, all natural delicious, quality sauces and products. I was always known as the guy who made great sauces but I wanted it to mean something on a grander scale.
A business idea that was left on the editing room floor?
Marketing HAKS by filling a bathtub up with sauce and taking pics of me, eating ribs in it. (I still might do it).
What are some rookie mistakes you made when starting out?
Trusting that everyone I work with feels the same way about the food industry and takes my business as seriously and passionately as I do. Unfortunately, it’s not the case. I had to work hard to build a team of people I trust.
How do you stay motivated in the face of competition?
HAKS became my baby. It means everything to me to grow my brand, succeed and get into the hands of everyone and anyone who loves and appreciates good food. There is no option but to succeed.
What’s the strangest customer request or feedback you’ve gotten?
People have told me that they bring HAKS with them when they go out to eat. Men stash it in their back pockets and women in their purses to add flavor to meals!
Whats your biggest business goal for this year?
3 million in sales
Where do you see your business in 10 years?
I see HAKS as a household brand name that everyone knows and loves. I see us having a multitude of products and I see us using our success to do good with and giving back.
Your dream celebrity endorsement?
Abraham Lincoln. Seems like a trustworthy guy…who’s gonna say no to him?
What’s your team or company motto?
Life is Short.. Eat it up!
Advice for someone with a great artisan food or drink idea?
If you TRULY love your idea and LOVE what it stands for, then you will succeed. Love drives success.
