Sprout Nourishment, founded by Jaci Salley and Benjamin Murken in 2014, is a nutrition, exercise and wellness company that encourages, consults, and supports people to eat healthy, exercise often, and live well.
Sprout Nourishment’s goal is simple: to educate the masses about true health, provide nutritional information and to help them take steps toward a healthier future.
The Sprout team knows that taking that first step can be the most challenging, especially with the amount of misinformation about health out there – which is why Sprout Nourishment wants to be a simple and delicious first step people can take to improve their health.
Sprout Nourishment currently offers a range of high protein, energy snacks including energy squares and protein bars:
ENERGY SQUARES LEMON POMEGRANATE: High energy, organic and raw energy squares loaded with nuts, seeds, dried fruit and superfoods. They’re perfect to take hiking, sports tournaments, or even at the office. They’re USDA Organic, Vegan, Raw, Soy Free and Salt Free.
ORGANIC ENERGY SQUARES – CAROB GREENS: Just like the Lemon Pomegranate squares, these squares are high in energy, organic and raw loaded with nuts, seeds, dried fruit and superfoods! Again, perfect to take hiking, to a sports tournament, or curb cravings at the office. They’re USDA Organic, Vegan, Soy Free, Raw and Dairy Free.
PLANT POWER PROTEIN BAR: Packed with 21 grams of protein, these bars are perfect for a post-workout nosh. They’re made with plant-based whole foods, GMO-free ingredients, and organic superfoods and has an incredible dark chocolate almond taste. These Plant Power bars are also certified USDA Organic, Vegan, Salt Free and Soy Free.

Who are the business founders and when did you launch the business?
Jaci Salley, Certified Health Coach and Personal Trainer and Benjamin Murken, CEO, CFO and CIO started Sprout Nourishment in 2014.
What inspired you to start your business?
I was inspired by the changes the body can make, when it’s being taken care of, to cure skin, digestion and energy illnesses. I wanted to share health and nutrition information with everyone and to share the importance of how food affects your quality of life.
Where do you currently make your product and how did you find the process of finding a kitchen to be like?
I use partner kitchens in California which I found through lots of research online and a kitchen in Wisconsin that we were lucky enough to have a family connection to.
Did you have a background in the food/drink industry when you started?
None! We’re learning as we go.
A business idea that was left on the editing room floor?
“Healthy” meat sticks.
What are some examples of rookie mistakes you’ve made?
We get so excited during the development stage of our new products, that we start sharing it with everyone. Then THEY get excited and want it right away. Food development and production take a lot longer then we thought, so we’ve learned to be patient and wait to share the exciting news, until it’s in the final stages of production.
What’s your biggest business challenge to date?
- Getting capital investment in order to continue to expand
- Government regulations that aren’t in line with the health food industry
How do you stay motivated in the face of competition?
We LOVE competition and we welcome it. It challenges us to dig deeper and create new organic ideas, that will help people flourish. That being said, we hope to educate people enough that they will make the best decision on products and lifestyle for themselves.
What’s the strangest feedback you’ve gotten from a customer?
“It’s weird that healthy tastes good, I’m not used to it” is a common one we get from customers who aren’t typically healthy eaters.
What’s your main business goal for 2015?
To discover effective marketing vehicles and leverage them.
Where do you see the business in 10 years?
As a total wellness organization that has snack foods, entire meals, nutrition coaching, personal training, and destination wellness travel business sectors.
What’s your team or company mantra?
Eat Healthy, Exercise Often, and Live Well!
Advice for someone with a great artisan food or drink idea?
Stick with it! Be willing to put the time and effort into gaining traction. Go to every event, customer, or business partner you can think of and eventually you’ll pass the tipping point and you’ll hit some great momentum. Also, leverage the connections you have closest to you and go from there.
