PoshaGreen Elevates the Nutritional Supplements Game


PoshaGreen is a system of plant-based, allergen free, performance and whole health nutritional supplements. Sudi Chakravarthy launched this new take on traditional workout stacks in 2013 after months of perfecting the fruit sweetened flavors of the all natural shake mixes. We first met Sudi at the Worcester Veg Fest and got to hear his story and try his tasty smoothies.

In making health changes of his own, Sudi discovered that not all dietary lifestyles are created equally. Sudi realized that a vegan diet wasn’t enough to combat the effects of unhealthy food and the sedentary lifestyle that came along with a traveling job. When his wife encouraged him to get in shape, Sudi found that plant protein supplements only worked for a short period of time – he found Ayurvedic herbs to be his best choice.

Sudi researched traditional healing practices in a variety of cultures including Chinese, Amazonian and European and combined it with his knowledge of what a typical active body needs to lay the groundwork for PoshaGreen.

Who are the business founders and when did you launch the business?

Sudi Chakravarthy is the business founder and PoshaGreen was incorporated in November 2011. Products were launched for public in April 2013 at Worcester VegFest.

What inspired you to start your business?

I turned vegan 11 years ago, however this did not automatically make me healthier. A traveling job, bad food, and no workout all took a toll on my health. Around 2006, my wife kicked me into action when she became concerned by my health—overweight and unfit, I would even stress out by walking.

To get back in shape, I started working out and supplementing with plant protein and synthetic stacks. I saw temporary results, but this would soon plateau, followed by negative side effects. I was on a quest for a safe vegan supplement for long lasting physical conditioning—this was the starting point for my business.

What was your AHA moment?

A friend of mine suggested Ayurvedic herbs as an alternative to synthetic workout stacks. I’ve used Ayurveda in the past as medicine, but it didn’t take long for me to experience the wonders of ancient herbs for physical conditioning.

Excited, I researched other traditional medicines, including Chinese, Amazonian, and European remedies, and found that every civilization had over thousands of year’s worth of identified native herbs that support health and strength. This inspired me to fuse these cultural traditions with modern nutritional knowledge to get the best of both the worlds.

Where do you currently make your product and how did you find the process of finding a kitchen to be like?

We currently manufacture in a dedicated facility in Newton, New Hampshire. We tried a shared kitchen in the Boston area, but it didn’t work out, as we wanted our products to be absolutely allergen free.

Did you have a background in the food/drink industry when you started?

I was into natural cures as a teenager and practiced acupressure and reflexology. My formulations are a result of extensive research over four years and consultations with Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. I am now certified in Food Safety in Massachusetts.

A business idea that was left on the editing room floor?

I’ve put an idea for an eco-resort to showcase sustainable lifestyle to the side.

What are some of rookie mistakes you made when starting out?

I underestimated how important taste was for a product. I cannot think of another product that is all-natural and highly functional in the market, but taste was a table stake—it took us 18 months to refine taste to compete with leading brands.

How do you stay motivated in the face of competition?

Be doggedly persistent! Posha is a new concept in nutrition and we are a mission driven company. It is not easy to compete with the marketing budget of established brands, however we are clear in our values and believe in our products, and we want to grow with the success stories of our customers!

What’s the strangest customer request or feedback you’ve gotten?

The herbs we use have multiple beneficial properties. The most surprising feedback was when a lady wanted to buy the Post-Workout Recovery shake for her mother who was recuperating from cancer. Many herbs in Recovery promote detox and cleansing after physical stress. She immediately recognized a great combination of healing herbs and was excited to gift it her mother.

What’s your main business goal for 2014?

Marketing. We’ve put extraordinary effort into formulation, taste, manufacturing, and green packaging—2014 is the year we want to get the word out and share this wonderful product with the world.

Where do you see the business in 10 years?

In our vision for the future we want to grow from sports nutrition to general/condition-specific nutrition, healthy pre-packaged fast food, and healthy food commodities. While doing so, we want to be a leading voice and serve as practitioners of sustainable and green living.

What’s your team or company motto? 

Our trademarked tagline is “It’s Naturally Possible,” meaning superior wellness and body conditioning through plant based natural foods is possible for everyone.

Our informal motto is “Live long, live strong.”

Advice for someone with a great artisan food or drink idea?

Find your niche, be passionate about your product, and though it’s expected, don’t be fazed with initial challenges.
